VA is recommending veteran's visit the "Together We Served" website, which serves as a clearing house for veterans to find others they served-with, as well as to make a formal record of the details of your service and your post-service life for your own purposes. Basic membership is free, and more advanced membership is very reasonably priced.
With a Basic membership, you create a detailed record of your service, and are ultimately presented with a free plaque, which can be mounted in a frame for display on wall or desk. You also get the ability to search records of people you might have served-with as your record of unit assignment dictates.
With advanced membership, you get the ability to search the service records of over 2.1 million veterans across the country who have joined this organization.
In just checking casually, I've already located several people I went through Basic Training with, served with in SF, and even fellow members I served with in the CA National Guard.
